As Doug Ruzicka speaks to your students they become captivated with his manner, his story and the Last Frontier, Alaska. The students spend a moment of their lives experiencing the wilderness, the challenge of dog sledding, and the beauty of Alaska as Doug shares with them his knowledge and his life. They begin to understand the determination, strength and motivation a man, or woman must have in order to traverse a great, wild wilderness with a dog sled team. The determination and strength of animal and man in the Alaska wilderness is the focus of a MushHusky Assembly. Students see the gear used while dog sledding in Alaska. They learn how man can survive in 50 below temperatures. Doug brings a dog sled and the students have the opportunity to meet the real hero of the "north" the Alaska Sled Dog. (Airline rules permitting) A MushHusky Assembly runs in length between 45 minutes to an hour. It is a very inter-active assembly with one or two students having the opportunity to help demonstrate some of the equipment used on the dog sled trail in Alaska. Doug has about a 10 minute slide presentation towards the end of the program and then spends about another 10 minutes answering questions and visiting with the students. Doug mixes humor and knowledge in a manner which inspires learning. He connects with the students in a way that few speakers are able to do.
He emphasizes Alaska History and geography as he visits with the students. The students learn that Alaska is far more than a frozen land of bears and ice. It is a land where white-capped mountains and forests, plains and wildflowers meet the Pacific Ocean to create the land of the Midnight Sun. This is where Doug lives and raises his family. This is where he runs his dog sled team. This is the land called Alaska. View our Educational Materials
